The Chuck Jedrej Lecture in African Anthropology

PLEASE NOTE THIS SEMINAR IS ON FRIDAY, 16th MARCH AND STARTS AT 3pm.

ABSTRACT

Chuck Jedrej's research on masks and secret societies from the central Guinea coast, which was published during the 1980s, significantly shaped the anthropological interpretation of West African masquerades. This paper draws on Jedrej's analysis of cosmology and symbolism to understand the persistence of masquerade performance in the contemporary context of insecurity and uncertainty in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Against a narrative of criminalisation and demonisation the paper explores how masking  is now inflected in a rich, diverse and surprising forms of performance and covert mobilization.
