ABSTRACT

The media in much of Africa are experiencing dramatic changes, thanks to increased globalisation, advancements in media technologies and changes in the continent’s socio-political and economic circumstances. In this presentation, I discuss some of these changes, focussing on the increasing internationalisation or globalisation of what was, for decades, national and regional media. I also attempt to analyse the implications of these changes for Africa’s socio-political and cultural development and for the continent’s location in and relationship with the world. Using African films as a specific case study, I relate the realities of African media internationalization to notions of media contra-flows, cultural imperialism and transnationalism.
