The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated by the United Nations to lead and coordinate international action for the world-wide protection of refugees and the resolution of refugee problems. It is in the frontline of the current refugee ‘crisis’, in the UK and in the rest of the world including Syria, Afghanistan, DR Congo, South Sudan and the many hot spots of the planet.

Gonzalo Vargas Llosa took up his post as UNHCR’s Representative to the UK in October 2014. He arrived in London after four years as the Refugee Agency’s Representative in the Dominican Republic. He has also served in New York, Panama and UNHCR’s Geneva headquarters, as well as on emergency missions in Pakistan, Darfur, Sudan and Libya.
