As part of the Centre of African Studies seminar and Africa Week, we will hold a screening of ‘Mandela, A True Pan-Africanist’ (2018), this new documentary brings to light Mandela’s vision of Pan Africanism. Comprised of interviews, archive footage and brought together through animation this documentary captures his prominent politicians, scholars, musicians and activists from across the African continent as they respond to Mandela’s idea of pan-Africanism. He was warmly received by senior political leaders in several African countries, including Algeria, where he underwent guerrilla training, and in Ethiopia where he addressed the Conference of the Pan African Freedom Movement of East and Central Africa held in Addis Ababa. This will be followed by a discussion with director and apartheid activist, Firdoze Bulbulia, who will discuss the film, and also her own experience of being an anti-apartheid activist, and other experts on the subject of Pan-Africanism.
