Was there a tradition of an Ethiopian national army that served a nation state, and what were the concepts behind  nation and national defense? The talk will address these questions with reference to archival and oral historical resources regarding a tradition of a military force known as the chewa. A special focus will be on attributes of heroism, warriorhood and defense. Use will be made of a military insignia, as depicted on the image of Emperor Endybis from the beginning of the fourth century CE. This will highlight the enduring perceptions of heroism;  a summary of how that symbol relates to the Ethiopian landscape will address the broad changes that occurred over the centuries.
