On August 18, a group of Malian officers overthrew President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta. The coup followed a summer of anti-incumbent protests and came amid a wider crisis in Mali and the wider Sahel region. That crisis involves mass violence, flawed elections, endemic poverty, disruptions to education, and complex humanitarian emergencies. This seminar examines the background to the coup, the current state of Malian politics, and the wider ramifications of the coup for understanding the Sahelian crisis as a whole.
