Dr Ian Duffield
Loyal friend to CAS passes away
CAS is sad to announce the passing of Dr Ian Duffield after a short illness. Ian came to Edinburgh in the early 1960s, after working in Ethiopia, to study for a PhD on Pan-Africanism. He was subsequently appointed to a post in the Department of History. Although History was always his affiliation, he was a very close and loyal friend of CAS throughout his time at the University. Indeed, Ian remained a regular participant in our weekly seminar until the end, and even talked of trying to attend ECAS in June. He had an omnivorous intellectual appetite and was formidably well-read. Ian could hold forth on just about any topic imaginable, and frequently did so! He was incredibly supportive of younger researchers, and also had an eye for new ideas and methodological approaches. The CAS community will sorely miss Ian, and his contributions at so many different levels. Our sympathies go to Jill and the Duffield family.
