Guidance and Feedback Hours

  • Mondays 14.00 - 16.00

I research economic development, with a particular focus on industrial policy, agriculture and the extractive industries in southern Africa. My main focus is currently on the political economy of the mining industry in South Africa, and specifically the developmental impact of platinum mining. For this I work in collaboration with researchers at the Society, Work and Development Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. In this work I have a particular interest in questions concerning the impacts of financialisation and global production networks on economic change. My other main area of research interest is in agricultural development, and I am currently beginning  a new project on agro-processing and inclusive industrial development in Tanzania and South Africa. I have additional research interests in infrastructure, energy and state owned enterprises in post-apartheid South Africa, and the history of science, technology and expertise in international development. Prior to coming to Edinburgh, I worked at the Society, Work and Development Institute, University of the Witwatersrand, and at the ESRC Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change, University of Manchester. My PhD at the University of Manchester was on the history of development policy in Zambia, with a focus on the use of science and technology in state efforts to improve agricultural productivity.

I teach postgraduates on the MSc in International Development and MSc in Africa and International Development, including the Semester 1 core-course 'Politics and Theories of International Development' and the elective course 'Business and International Development'.

I am the Postgraduate Advisor for the PhD Programmes in International Development and in African Studies, and act as a Pathway Representative for the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science's Language-Based Area Studies studentships.
