Descending from Our Children? Birth and Belonging among Zambia's White Minorities

Joan Haig is funded by the Leverhulme Trust

This research explores decisions that parents among Zambia’s white minorities make for their children, and how these might impact on ideas about individual and collective belonging. Decisions include place of birth, naming, and citizenship; they involve a wide set of factors including perceptions of medical risk, family ties, ideas of security, and attachment to place. The underlying theme is widely relevant: how do individuals and groups utilise the future, as well as the past, in constructing and defending their identities?
