Outline biography

From 2001 to 2004 I studied Political Science as an undergraduate at the University of Genova. In 2007 I completed a Master in "Cooperazione e Sviluppo, Locale e Internazionale" at the University of Bologna, with a dissertation on land tenure reforms in Ethiopia's Wag Hamra Zone (Amhara Region), where I conducted some field research. From 2008 I have been member of the board of editors of the Journal "Afriche e Orienti". In 2008 I enrolled on a PhD programme in "International Cooperation and Sustainable Development Policies" at the University of Bologna, with a dissertation on Governance of the Land and Decentralisation in Ethiopia. During my PhD I have been visiting  researcher at Noragric, Norwegian University of Life Sciences in 2008. Between 2009 and 2010 I was in Ethiopia for my PhD fieldwork and I was also affiliated as Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies of Addis Ababa University. Fieldwork areas include Siraro Woreda of Oromia Region and Deguna Fanigo Woreda of SNNP Region. During my last year of PhD I was also involved in the ACP funded project CoBaSys (Community Based System in Hiv Treatment). Since September 2011 I started my postdoc at CAS, working on PISCES, Policy Innovation Systems for Clean Energy Security.

Research interests

I have been working in Ethiopia since 2006 carrying on research on land and rural development policies. Major themes linked to my research include: access and use of land in East Africa; decentralization of land management and administration; land reform in sub-Saharan Africa; land tenure reforms and land registration programmes in developing countries; rural development policies and livelihood generation; formalization and informalization of land rights; food security and food aids, biofuel production and access to land.
